Shakopee, Minn. -- Sugar Rushh won the $23,200 North Star State Derby by a head Thursday at Canterbury Park, covering 400 yards in 20.688 seconds. The 3-year-old, who did not break from the gate alertly, is trained by Jason Olmstead and owned by Paul Luedemann’s Summer Run, Inc. “I wasn’t thrilled with the hop at the start,” Luedemann said. “But I knew the 400 yards wouldn’t hurt her.”
The favorite also won the $22,600 North Star State Futurity. Kiss My White Socks, trained by Patrick Swan, powered away from the field to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 15.823 seconds for 300 yards.
